When West Ham United return to action on Monday night against Huddersfield Town, they will be facing August’s Manager of the Month winner, David Wagner.
The German won the award after guiding The Terriers, playing in the Premier League for the first time, to two wins and a draw from their opening three league fixtures.
Victories over Crystal Palace and Newcastle United were followed by a draw with Southampton, with the Yorkshire side yet to concede a goal on their return to the top tier.
However, much has been made in recent years of the supposed ‘curse’ of the Manager of the Month, with winners said to suffer bad luck in the first fixture after winning the award.
With West Ham being Town’s next opponents, should the Hammers have anything to worry about?
The stats on this question are mixed, with four of last season’s nine winners going on to pick up three points immediately afterwards, with there also being two draws and three losses.
Jurgen Klopp guided Liverpool to a 2-1 win at Swansea, Antonio Conte’s Chelsea beat Everton (5-0) and Manchester City (3-1), and Pep Guardiola saw his Manchester City side run out 2-0 winners at Sunderland after they picked up the award.
Mike Phelan (Hull City) and Eddie Howe (Bournemouth) both claimed a point in their next game, whereas Conte and Mauricio Pochettino endured losses.
However, that last result should give Hammers fans confidence, with Tottenham Hotspur’s loss coming against West Ham United.
On May 5, Spurs’ title chances were all but ended when Manuel Lanzini’s goal was enough to win the Hammers the game.
Slaven Bilic will be hoping that his side can repeat that result this Monday evening when Premier League newcomers Huddersfield Town come to the London Stadium.
