According to Portuguese newspaper Record, the club will go head-to-head with Manchester United to try and sign the 26-year-old.
Although the Hammers have been linked with Jimenez all summer, it comes as a surprise to see the Red Devils linked with the striker after bringing in Romelu Lukaku from Everton in July.
Reports in Portugal over the past week claimed that both clubs were in the country on Monday to watch the striker in his side’s 1-0 win against Chaves.
Even though the ex-Atletico Madrid man only played the final 12 minutes of the game, a number of scouts from other clubs across Europe, including Spurs, Anderlecht and Celta Vigo, were there to keep an eye on the player.
Jimenez almost became a West Ham player in 2015 but the move never got over the line due to the player’s alarm clock failing to go off.
While the player went on and signed for Benfica a few hours later, it finally looks like he could he potentially pull on the claret and blue shirt.
Jose Mourinho’s reported interest in the striker may swing the move in United’s favour, but West Ham will be hoping Javier Hernandez, Jimenez’s international teammate, can help guide the striker to east London.
