Linked with a move to the Premier League champions or Spurs throughout the summer, it finally looked like one of the longest-running transfer sagas would finally come to an end.
However, after the Blues agreed a £35million deal for the 23-year-old, Barkley pulled out of a move to west London during his medical.
Although he was odds-on to leave Goodison Park after telling Ronald Koeman he wanted to move elsewhere, Barkley will remain an Everton player until January at the very least.
Given Chelsea’s paper-thin squad, many people criticised the player for not completing a deal to move to Stamford Bridge.
Here are what some pundits had to say following the news that Barkley will stay on Merseyside.
“They haven’t got the biggest squad. I’d like to hear the full story, but I’m shocked.
“Maybe he got nervous about living in London?
“Well you can’t live in Liverpool all your life.”
“I’m scratching my head. It is clear he is not part of Ronald Koeman’s plans at Everton. It was a great opportunity for him, I thought.
“How does it happen? That doesn’t usually happen in the modern era, certainly with the amount of money that is bandied about.
“It is a bit embarrassing I think for whoever is behind it. I know his agent, so I’m not going to name him, but it is a bit worrying how that never got over the line.
“You will probably see him move in January. He is injured at the minute and there are rumours it could be a couple of weeks and other rumours it could be October/November.
“If you are haggling over wages or length of contract you are always better to do it when fully fit.
“And sides are smart – they know that transfer will change between now and January because of his contract situation.”
“In order to go and fulfil his potential, I think Pochettino will be the best for him.
“Tactically he will improve him as a player at Tottenham.
“He’s got the ability, but tactically is he aware of other things?
“As a midfielder, you can make runs off him. Does he want to do the tracking?
“He might feel Spurs might be the right answer and Pochettino could be the right coach.”
