But after a short break away, Bamford has taken the decision to return to Teesside and put the wheels in motion ahead of schedule for next season.
“I obviously haven’t played that much over the last 18 months then I was disappointed that when I did start playing, the season finished,” he explained.
“So I went on holiday straight away just to relax a bit and take my mind off things, then I wanted to get back to it straight away.
“I organised a plan with the physios and the conditioning guys here. That started on Monday and will go until the end of pre-season.
“To be fair, most pre-seasons I do a little bit back home in the gym but it’s usually all weights-based.
“Whereas this is looking at everything in detail. I’ve looked at the plan this week and it looked good, I was really impressed. Hopefully it’s going to help me improve for next season.”
Bamford re-joined Boro on a permanent basis in the January transfer window but featured just once under Aitor Karanka before the former Head Coach’s departure.
That sharp end to the season sent Bamford away with a hunger to come back stronger and better for a head start on the Sky Bet Championship campaign.
“I was itching to play since I got here,” said Bamford. “I was waiting and waiting and had a few injury niggles and an illness to deal with which set me back a little bit.
“From the Burnley game I felt as though I was doing well and getting back into the swing of things.
“I got my start, scored and then played against Liverpool.
“Since the game I’ve been playing it back wondering if I could have scored if I stayed up! But I don’t think I could have, it’s just one of them. Then after that it’s all finished.”
This week marked the beginning of Bamford’s training regime and the forward is aiming to make progress on his physical condition as soon as possible.
“Monday I just did a reintroduction session to get everything firing. Then I had a really tough leg session mixed with loads of other things that lasted around two hours.
“I’ve been out jogging with Hubby and the physios and now it’s on to resistance, speed and working in the sand pit.
“The aim for me is to load up my legs and increase my power for that explosiveness.”
