The Reds have long been linked with making a swoop for Matic this off-season as Mourinho is keen to add a defensive midfielder to his ranks.
The Portuguese boss has already splashed out £106m this summer on Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku but is apparently frustrated he hasn’t got any other new faces to work with as United emabrk on their pre-season tour to the United States.
He has been linked with a move for Matic as well as Erid Dier at Spurs, Chelsea target Tiemoue Bakyaoko and Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan.
Bakayoko is close to sealing a move to Stamford Bridge which should pave the way for Matic to join his former manager but Mourinho didn’t refer to Matic when asked about his transfer plans earlier on Friday.
He said: “I can’t say any word about a player who is a Chelsea player ‘It’s difficult. I have to respect the player, the club, the owner, the manager. I don’t want to be disrespectful.
“We don’t have our door closed. We are not happy with just Lukaku and Lindelof, we need more. We wanted four, so I would say 50 per cent of the job is done, but I don’t want to say that because everything is so difficult.
“I would not like to be in Ed Woodward’s position negotiating because everything is really difficult. So maybe we don’t get two, we get one. But we need one more to give us more options.”
