Kevin Long has received his first call-up by the Republic of Ireland to join three of his Turf Moor team-mates in Martin O’Neill latest squad.
Long has started the Clarets’ last two Premier League games – his first at that level – and joins Stephen Ward, Robbie Brady and Jeff Hendrick in a 37-man party for friendlies against Mexico and Uruguay and a World Cup qualifier against Austria in Dublin next month.
“I saw Kevin Long play last week. He really impressed me, don’t discount him. It’ll be good to have a look at him,” said O’Neill after naming the former under-21 international at senior level for the first time.
Long, 26, is the Clarets’ longest serving player after arriving at Turf Moor from hometown club Cork City in January, 2010.
The centre-back is one of 12 defenders named by O’Neill for the game against Mexico in New Jersey on 1 June and then a home warm-up against Uruguay on 4 June ahead of the Group D qualifier at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday, 11 June.
