Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer appears to be heading to West Bromwich Albion with Ajax’s Davinson Sanchez expected to head to north London in his place.
Wimmer enjoyed a promising first campaign at Spurs after his switch from FC Koln in the summer of 2015, deputising seamlessly for the injured Jan Vertonghen in the second half of the Premier League season.
However, the 24-year-old Austriia international barely featured last season and looked shaky at times when called upon. Southampton and Crystal Palace had been linked with the defender only for his agent to claim that Spurs were keen to keep him and had placed a £20m price tag on his head.
football.london now understands that Wimmer is set to depart Tottenham with West Bromwich Albion his destination if all sides can finalise the terms in the coming days.
The Baggies have been rumoured to be losing defender Jonny Evans this summer, with Manchester City a surprise contender for his signature.
Wimmer’s departure would pave the way for Davinson Sanchez to make the move from Ajax to Spurs for a potential club record fee.
The player is reportedly keen on the move and Tottenham have held talks over bringing in the Columbia international, amid rumoured interest from Real Madrid and Chelsea.
The 21-year-old was named in Ajax’s squad to face Rosenborg in their Europa League play-off match on Thursday night, but Dutch media close to the team has been reporting that the player is not at the hotel with the other players.
Sanchez was left out of the team’s match against Heracles at the weekend as Ajax boss Marcel Keizer felt he wasn’t fully focused on the game at hand.
The player reportedly refused to train earlier in the week but was spotted in training on Wednesday before being named in the squad for the Rosenborg clash.
Keizer stated in his pre-match press conference that Sanchez had been named in the squad until anything changed in his situation with Ajax and Spurs believed to be struggling to compromise on a fee for the big defender. That situation looks set to change in the coming days.
