Kevin Wimmer has revealed what Mauricio Pochettino said to him before he left Tottenham Hotspur to join Stoke City during the summer transfer window.
Wimmer enjoyed a promising first campaign at Spurs after his switch from FC Koln in the summer of 2015, deputising seamlessly for the injured Jan Vertonghen in the second half of the Premier League season.
However, the 24-year-old Austria international barely featured last season and looked shaky at times when called upon at Tottenham.
Stoke then came in for him to offer an escape route and he made the move to the bet365 Stadium before the window closed. However, he said there were no hard feelings on either side.
“I had a very good conversation with him at the end and he was very happy for me about the move,” Wimmer is quoted as saying in the Stoke Sentinel.
“It was very good that he also made it possible that I could join Stoke. Of course, with Mark Hughes, I have another good manager and I’m very happy to be here.
“I want to keep improving, but there’s nothing to show to Mauricio because at Spurs, we had lots of good centre-backs and I was happy to be part of this team for two years.
“I think it was good for my improvement. I didn’t play too much, but with this team, I kept on improving and I’m trying to show that now.”
