Arsenal’s hopes of landing Julian Draxler appear to have been handed a crushing blow.
Reports emerged in France on Thursday that Paris Saint Germain were willing to let the German star leave following the arrival of Neymar and with the signing of Monaco sensation Kylian Mbappe believed to be imminent.
Arsenal – who have had a long standing interest in Draxler dating back four years – were immediately linked, as were Liverpool and Barcelona.
But Draxler’s representative, Roger Witterman, has shot down reports that the attacker is on his way out of the French capital this summer.
Witterman told Bild: “Draxler will stay and will not be sold this summer.
“Paris is building a group with the best players in the world at every post, and Julian is one of them and he wants to continue to be part of it.”
Meanwhile, Paul Merson believes Arsenal have missed a trick by not signing Gareth Barry.
The veteran midfielder left Everton to join West Brom this week and the former Gunners favourite feels he would have been perfect for Arsene Wenger’s side.
Merson said: “I look at him and think, why didn’t Arsenal take him for a year?
“He gets the ball, moves it forward quickly, he doesn’t mess about, no airs and graces.
“He gets the ball, he’d give it to Ozil and give it to Sanchez. He’d just sit there and allow players to go and play.
“He’s never going to go anywhere as he’ll always stay where he is and keep his shape. I just think he’s an unbelievable buy for West Brom.”
