Had Spurs had their way in the transfer market, Belgian defender Thomas Meunier could well be lining up for his debut at Everton this weekend.
Although the club managed to sign Serge Aurier from Paris Saint-Germain on transfer deadline day, the Lilywhites had actually tried to sign the right-back from the Ligue 1 club.
Even though PSG had signed Dani Alves from Juventus, the French side would not let the 25-year-old leave as they wanted cover for the Brazilian international.
Chelsea, who also wanted to bring in another right-back, also failed in their attempt to sign the former Club Brugge player.
A source close to Meunier said: “Thomas was at the top of both Chelsea and Tottenham‘s wish lists.
“But PSG refused to let him go.”
Following the interest in the highly-rated full-back, PSG are set to offer the player a new deal to keep him at the Parc des Princes.
Should Meunier have come to the Premier League ahead of Aurier and Davide Zappacosta? Let us know in the comments below.
