It was a choice that Antonio Conte used against Inter Milan during pre-season and Chelsea fans might be seeing the combination of Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi once again.
The 2-1 defeat in Singapore had thrown up some interesting moments between the pair, a relationship that seemed to have some legs but during that game it was few and far between.
But Conte hinted today in his pre-Community Shield press conference that the duo might face up against Arsenal together once more on Sunday.
“In this moment it could be a possibility, when you have Hazard injured and Pedro injured I don’t see another option, you have only option. I tried this combination.
“This could be an option for me. For sure, Alvaro wants to play number nine but with his characteristics he could play as number 10.
But how would it work if the duo were to start Sunday’s game at Wembley side-by-side?
Well it would be a massive surprise should Conte switch from his 3-4-3 formation, after saying today: “After a good season you have to keep the positive thing and change negative. One positive was the formation and system. We need to improve, every system needs to improve season by season.”
So you would most likely see Morata come out and play on the left of the three up front, with Willian wider on the right-hand side. Like he did against Inter, the 24-year-old will drift more centrally, looking to team up with the Belgian striker and play off the front man.
It is when the Blues don’t have the ball that Morata will most likely have to be aware of his defensive responsibilities, meaning he will have to help out Marcos Alonso a bit more in that position.
According to Conte, it is obvious that this not the perfect position for the new club-record signing, but at the moment the Blues are going to have to just make do.
It is a relationship that should be able to work and develop over time, but the Blues don’t have a lot of time to make it work with Sunday around the corner, but it will be a chance to see the pair working off eachother.
