Burnley FC’s Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Nick Pope visited Burnley FC in the Community’s Premier League Works group at Turf Moor recently to chat to participants on the programme.
The Premier League Works programme, set by the Premier League, uses the power of football to engage young people who are not involved in education, training or employment and aims to help them progress closer to volunteering or employment.
Facilitated through group sessions, activities include CV workshops, budgeting and money management, interview techniques and a daily job search with the skills gained enhanced through a work experience placement and 1:1 sessions with trained staff members.
The afternoon was also used as an opportunity to announce Gudmundsson as the Turf Works Ambassador, using his profile to support the programme and highlight the positive impact football can have on people.
During the visit both players talked to the group about their experiences of facing difficult times and persevering to reach your goals. They also gave the group advice to take forward with them into the job interview process such as showing commitment and learning to control the controllable and not let setbacks and external factors affect you achieving your end goal.
Burnley FC in the Community Employability Officer Claire Grimshaw said: “We are delighted to announce Gudmundsson as Burnley FC in the Community’s Turf Works Ambassador. We work with a diverse range of people on the programme helping them to overcome barriers to employment which can be difficult, therefore having Gudmundsson’s support and backing is fantastic. The group thoroughly enjoyed meeting the players and have taken on board the valuable advice and words of encouragement they were given.”
Alongside the Premier League Works Programme, Burnley FC in the Community also offer a G4S Journey2Work Programme for those over 18 who may be on benefit, long term unemployed or facing multiple barriers to employment. The 12-month scheme, including fortnightly 1:1’s and a personalised development plan, focuses on helping participants gain employment. When work is secured additional support is also provided post course for both the employer and employee to ensure the participant stays in work.
Recent G4S participant John O’Brien joined the G4S Journey2Work Programme after experiencing various personal issues resulting in him being out of work. Only one month after being referred to the Turf Works programme from the Job Centre John got an interview at B&Q in Blackburn. He received support from Burnley FC in the Community throughout the application process before successfully securing a job as a Customer Advisor on the Hardware department.
John said: “I was lacking in confidence and had seen jobs advertised that I knew I could do. The Turf Works team supported me as I applied for the job at B&Q. They helped me with my computer skills so I could successfully pass the online interview test and supported me with my interview preparation. I’m delighted to have secured a job and I want to thank the team at Burnley FC in the Community for all their help, they went above and beyond.”
Alongside help with finding work both Turf Works Programmes offer a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills and help participants build confidence and self-esteem.
