Injury news ahead of Huddersfield?
Andy Caroll is OK. He’s been training now for almost four weeks with us and he looks good. He is going to be in the squad definitely. OK, we are playing on Monday but he is back and will be there, definitely.
Manuel [Lanzini], no. He went with Argentina, but he has got a very similar injury so hopefully he is not ready for the game, it looks like a couple of weeks, minimum. Maybe three weeks but it is not a major prolbem. Not for Huddersfield though. Let’s be honest it would be great for West Brom game to be back but maybe he ill miss that to, it won’t be a surprise. But it is nothing major.
Winston Reid is back so apart from Manu, Edimilson Fernandes who has hurt his ankle when he was away with Switzerland, all the others are back.
You said you wanted one or two more in the transfer window, why didn’t that happen?
It didn’t happen because it didn’t happen. You know the stories. There was a lot in the media because of the transfer window we wanted some players, it didn’t happen and still I said, those players who missed the start of the season, part of the pre-season, when they get their fitness which will be very soon that we have a good team.
I am concentrated on the team that we have so there’s no point in talking about the players we didn’t have.
William Carvalho, why didn’t his move happen?
Why didn’t it happen? I think it was money, definitely money. I wanted the player, we wanted the player, I know the fact that we have been in talks with Sporting Lisbon, whether they were official or not, I don’t do these things, I am not negotiation side of things. I suggested the player, I wanted the player, we talked, it didn’t happen and only because the money was too high.
David Sullivan on Sanches and Krchowiak
He likes to talk, it is his right. I said I wanted the player, that is not exactly what happened with those two players. I wanted Carvalho and it looked very, very likely that it would happen and to be fair, during my time at West Ham it is common that when you talk about one player and it will happen, then suddenly three other names are thrown in that distract you from the main target. It was very likely we were going to get him though, they are very good players though of course.
Does it undermine you what his statement said?
I am here to talk about Monday’s game. The transfer window is finished and I understand that you want to talk about those issues but it is not my job to talk about that. You can ask other people, my job is to raise the performance of our team on Monday night that is a good opportunity for us to start winning games and get back on track.
That’s where I am putting all my work. The lads are training well, we don’t play tomorrow or Sunday, it’s Monday and I would prefer to talk about that.
We can’t do anything about the transfer window now, so let’s talk football.
Talks with Sullivan after Newcastle loss
I didn’t talk to the chairman in that way, just like how I do after every game. Of course, he knows and I know that the game against Newcastle was bad unacceptable and a very low point. I said that I have to raise the performance to get us back on the right track.
Is your job on the line?
No. Not been told that. I said to the chairman we have zero points and we have to start winning.
Will you remain manager if you lose?
I have told you so many times I don’t think about my job in that way. I think about my job as a good one, and where I have to put all my energy in working and talking with the lads trying to keep us humble when we are winning or get us in the zone when we are not winning.
Monday night is a game I am totally concentrating on.
How do you turn it around?
By working hard, changing something, maybe some new ideas, try to win games. There is nothing better than winning to get back on the path that you want.
What have you made of Huddersfield?
They have started really well, didn’t concede, have seven points. We have seen it before with the teams promoted from the Championship, they look good and enjoying the league.
They look fit, energetic, they do, so we have respect for them of course and we have to be on top of our form to beat them on Monday. They are a good team, a good squad and finished good last year. They have added to it a few good new players and as I sad they have started well and given a big boost. They have a positive atmosphere around them and we have to stop it.
London Stadium, the Spurs game, has it had a lasting effect?
It is good to play at home, we haven’t done yet and now we have it. It’s been a long time but we will train there tomorrow and Sunday, go into the dressing room to feel it a bit more. The game against Spurs was great, a good memory but it’s has nothing to do with the game on Monday night. It’s our first home game o the season, Monday night, it could be similar.
Has it helped having extra time with your players?
It helps to have some players that came back today or yesterday, we don’t only have them for just one day or so. The players from South America, Africa have had long trips and I am pleased we play Monday night so we have a couple more days of training.
Have you got a message to the Hammers fans ahead of the game?
The fans have always been great for us during after the game. Sometimes they are not happy on social media but I never felt during or before or beginning of the games, home or away, I always feel them and see them in numbers, then it is up to us to make them be even more behind us.
Has the spat between Sporting and West Ham added more pressure on you?
It has not added more pressure. There have been some issues I was asked about earlier but what can I say?
It was funny for me to read some of those comments but look, for me now to say something about that – which I am not afraid to do – but thats not the way I work, not in good or bad times. If I say something I will call him if it is the chairman or PR or whatever, I will not go public with how do you call it, dirty laundry, that’s it.
Is this your biggest game as West Ham boss?
We have had a few games like this, if you remember last season we had big games for different reasons. Suddenly, some games were crucial after just four games of the season. Even Watford game at home last season was like a D-Day game, I don’t know why. It seemed like that many times last season.
At least now, I am used to it, we have been here before and we showed last year we can cope with it and in difficult situations we have the quality an character to get out of that situation and that game. It means we can do it again.
What did you think when you read that comment?
Which one? I read a few of them, tell me, I felt like coming with a lawyer. There have been a few issues. Which one? Say it? Come on. You are expecting me to say it but you wont.
[The Dildo Brothers remark] That’s funny, it made me laugh but look, make no mistake, I don’t like to talk about these things all the time. What I know about that transfer is that because I wanted the player and that was going on for a while, we kept it low at first, it was six weeks, whole summer and it really looked promising.
Yes, from what I know is that we spoke of course, not me, but West Ham people did. They spoke to them about Carvalho, we wanted him, 100 per cent.
Do you feel let down?
I am here, smiling, laughing and that, why say that? I am frustrated that I didn’t get a player that I wanted for a couple of years but these things happen. It happens with other clubs too, look at Chelsea, of course I am frustrated but I am not angry. You can’t get all the things you want in life, we still have a good team.
