Any injuries or team news?
“Only one news and yesterday Danny Drinkwater had a muscular problem in his calf. We’re waiting to check the problem. Only this.”
Eden Hazard to start?
“Eden Hazard is in the group, is in the squad, is working very well to find the best physical condition. He needs a bit of time to continue to improve and to avoid to take stupid risks with him. But now he’s available and he will come on the bench.
“You know the importance of his player Eden last season played an amazing season. He’s a top player and we’re looking forward to have him in our team, in our squad. I think Eden is an important player for us, but for sure in this period we played without him and we were forced to play without him because of injury. We tried to win every game.”
“It’s normal to prepare some rotations. I trust all my players in my squad. There is the necessity to rotate and to play game by game.”
Morata settled in?
“Morata is playing very well. He’s scoring and he’s totally involved in our style of football. He’s improving a lot. Morata played the whole game with Spain, then he played the whole game against Leicester. I have to check many situations and then to make the best decision for tomorrow.
“It’s normal when you have to play seven games in 21 days I have a necessity to rotate my players. I’m very calm about this because I trust my players.”
Waiting for Champions League return?
“I played two Champions League with Juventus. I think when we played CL with Juventus, Juventus wasn’t this Juventus. We were at the start of our path. Don’t forget this.
“The previous season we dropped against Bayern Munich, the quarter-final, then Bayern Munich won the tournament. The next season we reached the final of the EL against Benfica.
“I have had these two experiences in Europe with the team. For sure I have more experience in this competition as a player. I played a lot of years. I played four finals. I won only one.
“This is a great competition and we must be pleased to be back after last season. We must be proud to play in this competition. This competition is very tough.”
How big is this challenge?
“We understand very well the level of this competition. Now I think the English team has another difficulty, because the league is very tough here. In my past sometimes before a CL game you rested. In England it’s not easy to do this. If you want to do this you risk a lot.
“We are ready and for this reason I need to rotate all my squad. They must feel totally involved in this process. We are starting a path and it will be very important to start building something important.”
The chances this season?
“I don’t know. If you ask me the chances of last season to win the title in England it was zero. Instead we changed totally the opinion of people.
“When you play this type of competition you play to try to do your best and try to win every game, to go step by step.
“I think we’re building something important for the present, but above all for the future. You start the competition in the same way as the other teams.
Thoughts on Qarabag
“Qarabag is a good team and for them this is the first time to play this competition. I know a lot of these players very well because I played against Azerbaijan when I was Italian coach. We played our qualification against them.
“We must pay great attention. These type of games I like to call these games tricky games. And we must pay great attention.
“We played two days ago, we have to play tomorrow, then we have to play a tough game against Arsenal
“It’s normal and there is the necessity to do rotation. Otherwise you arrive to play the rest of games against teams without energy.”
Premier League and Champions League a massive test?
“For me, for sure, this is something new. My previous experience was in Italy. To be realistic is not easy. When you play against a medium team and you have to know that you risk to lose the game in the league.
“In this league there are six, seven teams ready to not only fight for the title but for a place in the Champions League and Europa League.
“You are never relaxed in England, because you have to play a tough league and also FA Cup and also Carabao Cup. Now we have to play Champions League. To play 60, 65 games it’s normal, but it’s not easy.
“When there is the international break they stay with the team and they have to play.”
Thoughts on Frank de Boer sacking
“I’m sorry for him. It’s normal. When you start to work you try to ask for a bit of time for your work. I’m sorry for him because to be a coach in the league is a great experience and to finish this experience after only four games I’m sorry for him. It’s a pity. It’s always very difficult to speak about the situations of other teams. I’m sorry for the man.
“We know very well our job is this. One game you win, you are on top, another game you lose and you are the worst coach.
“This is normal, not only in England, in the whole world. I think it’s important to have always the right balance when you judge.
“I think every club must judge the work of the coach and sometimes there is a bit of emotion and you take decisions very strong following an emotional moment.
“I think every coach must be judged during the week, during every day, during the work to understand if they are doing very well, doing not very well.”
Is it a risk to rotate?
“Tomorrow night I think that when you make the decision there is always the risk. The risk could be to play with the same players as against Leicester and then after the game why didn’t you change the team that was tired?
“It’s important for our eyes. It’s important our previous experience as player and as coach. You know very well if you win you’ve made the best decision, if you lose you’ve made the worst decision.
“I must be realistic, I must be calm, to make the best decision for these seven games. Seven games in 21 days you have to play every three games. It’s not easy for the players to play every game.”
What will it be like to win the Champions League as a coach?
“Personally, I don’t like to think about myself. I always like to think about the club, about my players and to be involved in the same though about Champions League.
“It’s a great competition. You must be proud to play this competition. We must understand we are starting a path. I hope this path to be short and not too long, to try to be competitive in a short time and not wait three, four, five years.”
