The north east outfit have already secured the services of Christian Atsu in a £6.2million deal this summer from Chelsea after he spent last term on loan at St James’ Park.
Benitez is keen to strengthen his hand during the off-season further as he attempts to build a squad capable of enjoying a strong campaign back at the top level in 2017-18.
Reports claim that Baker has emerged as his next target, although Chelsea may only be prepared to allow him to leave on loan.
The 22-year-old joined Chelsea’s academy in 2005 and made his first-team debut in the FA Cup in 2014 but he has spent most of his senior career out on loan with Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and Vitesse Arnhem.
It’s understood that Bournemouth and Swansea have also been considering a bid for Baker but Newcastle’s relationship with the Blues may help them win the battle for his signature.
