Before each home game, Eagles skipper Scott Dann previews his side’s upcoming match in his programme notes. Here he speaks ahead of the visit of Hull City.
The injury is coming along really well; I’m back outside running again and hopefully I’ll be training with the lads by the start of next week, so I could play a part in the Manchester United game. Hopefully it won’t be a crucial one for us, and we’ll get the job done this afternoon.
We’ve lost three games on the bounce, but going into this one we still have the confidence from our good form before then. We’re aiming to get the result we need to put survival to bed today, so we won’t need anything at Old Trafford next week.
It’s disappointing to be so close to safety but not quite seal it yet. The Burnley game was a missed opportunity and you can never count on the teams around you losing games, so you have to concentrate on your own results. Going to Manchester City is never easy so you don’t expect to get a result up there, albeit we’ve beaten most of the big teams in recent months, but we’re still in a good position knowing it’s in our hands. We know we can get the result, and if we do that then it’ll be done and dusted.
Due to injuries, we’ve had a patched up defence recently which has robbed us a little bit. It’s been unfortunate as I got injured, then James and finally Mamadou which isn’t ideal because as a defender, you get better playing with someone in a partnership week in, week out. When the backline is chopped and changed around, it’s never easy to put in the same kind of performances. However, the lads who are fit need to stand up and be counted and show what good players they are, and hopefully they’ll do that this afternoon.
Having our destiny in our own hands is all you can ask for. Obviously, we don’t want to be in this position but when you consider where we were a few months ago and the results we’ve had, that should give us confidence. Everybody knows how big a game this will be, and it’s all about staying calm and producing your best performance despite everything that’s riding on the result. We can’t get caught up too much in the occasion because if we perform to our best, then we’ll get what we need, so we just need to focus on the task in hand.
When you get to this stage of the season, things can get nervy and the fans feel that. However, you guys are brilliant at getting behind the lads when you know that we need a result, and I’m sure that will be the case again today and hopefully by the end of the afternoon we’ll all be happy.
On that note, I would like to thank you for all your support home and away this season and rest assured we’ll do everything we can to send you into the summer still in the Premier League.
Don’t forget the 88 page matchday programme will be available around the stadium on the day of the match, priced just £3.50, or can be downloaded to your iPad or Android device for just £1.49.
