Even though the Belgian scored twice against Qarabag in the Champions League on Tuesday night, the former Arsenal hero is adamant that he cannot replace the summer signing for a long period of games.
The 23-year-old impressed towards the end of last season as the Blues lifted the Premier League title, yet he has once again found himself in and out of the team so far this campaign.
Following Morata’s impressive start to life in the Premier League, Merson has stated that he fears for Chelsea if the Spaniard has to spend time on the sidelines.
“You look at it and it looks quite strong at the moment,” Merson said on Sky Sports.
“But you’re talking 38 league games, you’re talking Champions League games, cup games.
“So over probably, if they have good cup runs, 60 games, will that be strong enough?
“The biggest worry is the centre-forward. If Morata gets injured, god-forbid he doesn’t, and the other lad’s got to play 12 games on the trot, then I see a problem.
“To come in for a couple of games here and there, he won’t let Chelsea down and he hasn’t.
“But if you give him a long distance of games, a longevity of games, I don’t think he will be enough.
“I think come January they will have to get another centre-forward, they’ve taken a big chance here.
“It’s alright playing Hazard up-front on his own or not playing a centre-forward and at the moment it’s a good enough squad, at the moment and they’re back to best.”
