Arsenal being linked with Julian Draxler is nothing new – the Gunners have been mentioned as a possible destination for the German star for years now.
Ever since he was a teenager, Draxler is a player who Arsene Wenger has admired – leading to constant speculation about a possible move to north London.
The chances of the attacker making the switch to Arsenal seemed to have died, however, when he left Wolfsburg to joining French giants Paris Saint Germain in a £40m deal in January.
Draxler enjoyed a fine start to his PSG career – serving up several impressive performances – and he looked set to stay for the long-term at the Parc des Princes.
But reports have now emerged that the forward is set to leave Paris already due to the arrival of Neymar and the imminent capture of Kylian Mbappe.
Immediately Arsenal were linked, along with several clubs from across Europe, including Liverpool and Barcelona.
So could Draxler finally make the move to the Emirates? Well according to an interview he gave with Telefoot earlier in the year Wenger did not try to sign him last January when he was last on the market.
“I had some good years in Germany but I wanted to experience something different,” said Draxler.
“For that reason, I chose to join PSG. The directors and coach at Wolfsburg have changed. I was on good terms with them and we decided it was best if I left.
“I listened to my heart and chose PSG as they play in a style that suits me best. I had several options though.
“Arsenal have been in contact since about two or three years ago but I was not in touch with them this winter.”
If Draxler were to lave PSG in the next couple of weeks then there is no doubt that a move to the Premier League would appeal to him.
The German international has never hidden his desire to one day play in England.
“I like English football. I like the Premier League of course – it’s one of the best leagues in the world,” Draxler told BBC Sport.
“You have big clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea – of course it’s a big dream to play for one of them. I have my favourite team, but at the moment I’m at Schalke. I don’t want to talk about other clubs.
“If I state Arsenal or Manchester United, maybe I’d read it tomorrow in the newspapers.”
With the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea being mentioned as possible destinations for Draxler, it could be that his relationship with two Arsenal players could hold the key.
Draxler is good friends with Sead Kolasinac and Mesut Ozil – and he has often spoken about playing in the same side as his German international teammate.
“He is a great player and I enjoy playing with him in the national team and I would love to play with him at PSG, Draxler told SFR Sport.
“We speak in a way like friends are talking and I say to him “come to PSG.” He is laughing and he said to me last summer “come to Arsenal.” It is just like this.
“I would love to see him here because he is a great player and an even greater guy.”
