Arsenal will be sick of the sight of Liverpool Football Club.
If losing 4-0 to Jurgen Klopp’s side wasn’t bad enough, the Reds look like they are going to sign long-term target Thomas Lemar from under the noses of the Gunners.
Talk about rubbing salt into the wound.
Although the move isn’t complete just yet, reports suggest that Liverpool are set to shatter their transfer record by bringing the French international to Anfield.
All summer it looked like the 21-year-old was going to be heading to north London, yet it looks like Arsenal are once again going to miss out on one of their main targets.
The players Wenger has missed out on over the years is well documented.
In fact, it’s a long-running joke amongst many.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Yaya Toure and Cristiano Ronaldo are just some of the names that could have appeared for the team at Highbury and the Emirates Stadium.
However, if Arsenal do indeed miss out on Lemar, it is going to sting for a long time.
The club can simply not stand by and be embarrassed by letting Lemar seal an unexpected move to Merseyside. What does it say to fans? What does it say to the players? What does it say to prospective signings?
Arsenal are a massive club and they cannot keep seeing teams buy their main transfer targets.
Given a fee has yet to be agreed between Liverpool and Monaco, Arsenal need to move swiftly and reignite their interest in the youngster.
After trying all summer to buy the highly-rated winger, Wenger confirmed last week that they wouldn’t be able to complete a deal.
A deal was ‘dead’ and the French club had ‘closed the door’ on potential outgoings from the Stade Louis 11.
But it seems the door has not quite closed just yet. Not for Liverpool, anyway.
As much as the Ligue 1 champions want to keep Lemar at the club, every player has a price.
Following one of the club’s worst days in the Premier League, Arsenal need some positivity from somewhere at the moment ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline.
Having had three bids rejected for the player over the summer, the club need to submit an acceptable fourth offer.
Amidst the news of Liverpool’s big-money bid, it is worth remembering that Lemar wanted to seal a move to the Gunners in the summer.
A move is still a possibility, although the club are now 16/1 to sign the player before Thursday’s deadline.
Many feel defence and midfield is now Wenger’s priority following the humbling at Liverpool, yet the club just simply cannot afford to lose out on Lemar.
It would be an absolute embarrassment if they let the player slip through their fingers.
At present, that looks like it’s going to be the case once again.
Same old Arsenal….
