Arnautovic staring down Bauer
The Hammers record signing was on the end of some rough treatment during the first half but he was more than up to the task as he put in a virtuoso display of complete arrogance and brillance.
The Austrian stood inches from his opponents nose, didn’t say a word and Bauer bid a hasty retreat from the area. Arnie is going to be a lot of fun this season.
Zhang tried the same thing with Zabaleta
In the second half, Zhang went in late on the new Hammers man and Pablo Zabaleta was none too pleased with the challenge.
Zhang, on-loan at Bremen from West Brom, got up to try and engage in a stare down with Zabaleta who has been taking tips from Arnautovic and just stood there, not saying a word, before everyone else piled in.
Often saying nothing actually says a lot.
Giving back to the fans
After the game, all of the West Ham players went out to meet the supporters who had made the trip to Germany over the past couple of days.
Selfies were taken, autographs were signed, one fan tried to tell Adrian not to sign for Crystal Palace, the usual stuff.
A nice touch towards the end saw Slaven Bilic head back to the dressing room, bring out a load of training shirts and hand them otut to a number of Hammers supporting kids who had made the journey. It was a really nice touch from the boss.
Arnie appreciating being mugged off
Midway through the second half, a Bremen player nutmegged Marko Arnautovic over on the far side and it brought huge cheers from the German supporters in Lohne.
Arnie laughed at himself as the Bremen winger lost the ball soon after and went over to shake his hand as if to recognise that he had been absolutely done over. Which he had.
Fair play, Marko.
