Reiss Nelson made his first-team debut for Arsenal in the pre-season friendly against Sydney FC in the Gunners’ inaugural fixture on the Australian leg of their tour.
And it’s safe to say he impressed Arsenal fans signficantly.
From the outset, the young midfielder – who was deployed at right-wing-back in the new-look 3-4-2-1 formation – was running at defenders, showed excellent poise on the ball and in possession and his performance excited Arsenal fans.
The Gunners have high hopes for the playmaker and the first-half display against Sydney in an unfamiliar position suggested he could be ready for a promotion to the first team next season, something manager Arsene Wenger alluded to in an in-house interview at the end of 2016/17.
“We have some young players who will join the squad next season,” Wenger told Arsenal’s official site.
“Like Reiss Nelson, like Ainsley Maitland-Niles already. So they are two players.’
“So we have quality players who might have a chance next season and hopefully we will be able to do that again because that’s part of the DNA of the club as well.”
Safe to say, Arsenal fans were delighted with the youngster – and the inevitable Lionel Messi comparisons soon surfaced.
Here’s a round-up of all the best social media reaction from fans to Nelson’s brilliant performance.
